Post-16 education

We provide clinical, counselling and educational psychology services to all types of post-16 education and training providers.

What types of post-16 settings do we work with?

We work with a broad range of post-16 education and training providers. There are many students whose learning needs do not become apparent until post-16 education due to the increased autonomy within learning. Read about our specific work with:

Our psychology services are available to all post-16 settings, the above list is not exhaustive. If a setting provides education or training to a young person, or young people aged 16-25 then contact us for a bespoke solution to needs.

What does the SEND Code of Practice say about post-16 settings?

The SEND code of practice (2015) provides guidance for the statutory requirements within post-16 education settings. The code of practice extends the age of young people supported from 19 to 25. There is a demand on post-16 settings to identify special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and implement appropriate resources to support young people with SEND in their learning. Our specialist psychologists can support with SEND requirements.

[Post-16 settings have the] duty to use their best endeavours to secure the special educational provision that the young person needs... to ensure that providers give the right support to their students with SEN…. They must fulfil this duty for students with SEN whether or not the students have EHC plans. This duty applies in respect of students with SEN up to age 25 in further education... The duty encompasses students on a wide variety of study programmes (including some on short programmes) and at every level from entry level upwards.

Do we carry out statutory work?

Our team of psychologists carry out both statutory work and non-statutory work within post-16 settings. As a needs-led, bespoke service our specialists carry out the work post-16 settings require.

What is included in non-statutory work?

Non-statutory work carried out by our specialist psychologists includes a range of our services, including specific assessments, interventions, training and consultation in addition to therapeutic work.

How do we work with the local authority?

We work with the local authority and can supplement any existing psychology support. Working with the local authority facilitates a joined-up approach to SEND support and the co-ordination of services, which reduces the need of repeating information.

How do we improve outcomes?

A student’s time in a post-16 setting is an opportunity to prepare for adulthood. Providing support according to identified needs increases students’ chances of achieving the best possible outcomes in adulthood. Addressing unmet needs can have a positive change on a young person’s life. Independence and life skills should be developing during post-16 education through a student’s time spent in education and at home. As psychologists we are able to assess the level of support an individual may need in order to become fully independent following post-16 education.

How can our psychology services be commissioned?

Our psychology services can be commissioned through a service level agreement if a college or sixth form are looking for regular psychologist input. Our psychology services can also be commissioned on a standalone basis.
