Lauren O'loughlin,

Psychology support

Helping children and young people to be happy, safe and prepared for life’s challenges is crucial to ensuring young minds have the opportunity to reach their full potential. I am hoping to offer a meaningful contribution to children’s progression, whether it be through education or simply improving their confidence and self-esteem as I feel both are equally important.

I have volunteered as a mentor for ‘ReachOut’ working with an 11-year-old boy after school, helping to boost his self-esteem and maximise his academic potential through character building exercises. I saw the positive effect a mere two hours a week had on his confidence and behaviour and would love the opportunity to continue to impact other children’s lives in the same way.

I am particularly interested in children’s mental health and development as I believe that tackling issues as young as possible gives a child the best chance to be happy, safe and ready to live a fulfilling life.

My experience

I have gained some experience volunteering and working with children over the last few years. This, combined with knowledge from my psychology degree and own experience has helped me to develop my understanding of mental health conditions, developmental disorders and how we can best support those who suffer with them. I am especially passionate about mental health and have experience in the following:

Why is wellbeing important?

Wellbeing is thought of as a combination of good mental and physical health - being able to manage and cope with negative stressors when they appear, whilst maintaining a positive sense of self and making a positive contribution to society. This is necessary for a person to flourish and reach their full potential.

What do you look forward to most with your work at HSR Psychology?

I look forward to gaining some insight into the world of psychology in action, instead of just learning theory in a classroom. I also look forward to developing my skill set in relation to working with kids with mental health and special education needs.

What fascinates you about children?

Children’s optimism and their ability to change and learn despite the circumstances fascinates me. I want to be able to help as many children as I can to reach a state of wellbeing in which they can flourish safely and happily.
