Initial discussion

An initial discussion refers to the process of reviewing information to decide on a plan of action.

The information reviewed during an initial discussion may include; medical history, birth history, developmental history, areas of concerns / strengths, history of previous health or education input (including any reports). We would gather this information at the initial discussion through speaking with parents, carers, education staff or the young person themselves.

The initial discussion is often your first contact with a psychologist from HSR Psychology, and will take place following a referral. The information from the initial discussion will help us make the most appropriate recommendations. This may include recommendations for specific; assessments, interventions, training, services and which of our team should be involved.

Can initial discussions take place over the phone?

Initial discussions can take place over the phone. For an initial discussion it is useful for us to have access to any previous reports or medical information, so in this situation we would ask for you to email or post any information in advance.

When would someone need an initial discussion?

Individuals who are interested in any of the following services would require an initial discussion:

When would an initial discussion not be needed?

Initial discussions are not required, but may be requested, for our following services:

Will the child or young person need to be present in the initial discussion?

The child or young person does not need to be present in the initial discussion. The initial discussion is not an assessment, therefore, the child or young person does not need to attend. However, if you feel as though it would be in the best interest for the child or young person to attend the initial discussion then they are welcome to attend.

What happens during an initial discussion?

The more information provided before an initial discussion, the more effective the discussion will be. We suggest that you provide as much information as possible on the referral form and that relevant information is collated and shared beforehand, including school and specialist reports, provision maps and behaviour plans. Having access to this information provides a comprehensive understanding to support shared goals and promote a joint discussion. If there is no formal information available then the initial discussion will involve finding out as much information as possible.

During the initial discussion we will listen to the history and review any information provided, we will then talk through possible options for an action plan, which may include appropriate assessments or interventions. During the initial discussion we will agree shared expectations of our involvement. Initial discussions are an opportunity for you to ask questions and speak to a psychologist about your concerns and expectations.
