Dynamic assessments

A dynamic assessment involves coaching a child or young person to complete difficult parts of an assessment through providing additional support to individuals to help them during a specific assessment.

Our specialist psychologists can provide dynamic assessments in all areas of special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

What is a dynamic assessment?

A dynamic assessment is a method of carrying out an assessment. The majority of specific assessments can be carried out through dynamic assessment. Examples of a dynamic assessment is talking through non-trial questions to explain how to work it out or providing a small amount of teaching. Following the teaching, the individual would try the assessment again to see if there is any difference in ability or attitude.

Who is suitable for a dynamic assessment?

Everyone is suitable for a dynamic assessment, and it is especially useful when the purpose of the assessment is to identify the best way to teach a child or young person.

What are the benefits of a dynamic assessment?

There are many benefits of a dynamic assessment as you can assess what an individual can achieve with appropriate support, other benefits include:

Following a dynamic assessment, recommendations may be made relating to interventions, teaching styles or an individual education plan (IEP). Dynamic assessment can be used with all ages and all abilities, making it an adaptive method of assessment.

What happens prior to a dynamic assessment?

A dynamic assessment can be carried out following an initial discussion, please see our process below.

Our process

At HSR Psychology we ensure that we meet the needs of children and young people. To achieve this we ensure that any specific assessments, intervention, or direct work, is only carried out following an initial discussion.

An initial discussion allows us to understand the background and your expectations of our involvement. Having an initial discussion ensures any services we provide appropriately identify or address needs.

Our process for any specific assessments, intervention, or direct work is as follows:

Step 1: Contact us

We will usually be contacted by the child or young person, parent or carer, or another professional (eg education or health).

You can contact us or complete a referral

Step 2: Arrange an initial discussion

An initial discussion allows us to understand the background and your expectations of our involvement. Arrange an initial discussion

What happens during a dynamic assessment?

What happens during a dynamic assessment depends on the specific assessments taking place. Usually there will be a combination of puzzles, questions and tasks to complete. As a team we are committed to making all assessments as interactive and enjoyable as possible.

Which dynamic assessments do we use?

All of our specific assessments can be used as part of a dynamic assessment. It is quite common to use aspects of multiple assessments during a dynamic assessment. The areas investigated through dynamic assessment will be discussed and agreed on during the initial discussion.

What happens after a dynamic assessment?

After a dynamic assessment we will provide information about an individual’s areas of strength and need. This feedback can happen through a feedback meeting or a report. The information we provide can be used to guide interventions, teaching adaptations and strategies for the home. We provide a broad range of follow-up services to meet all areas of need. Does a dynamic assessment come with a report?

Reports are available following a dynamic assessment upon request. We provide a broad range of reports to support applications, funding requests and as evidence of need. Our reports can be comprehensive, summary or for recommendations only. Read more about the reports we offer.

Dynamic assessments provide information relating to a child or young person’s potential with the appropriate support for their needs. A dynamic approach can happen on all specific assessments when a standardised measure is not required.
