We support children and young people by providing assessments and interventions for those with needs surrounding chronic fatigue syndrome.

What is chronic fatigue syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), can often be characterised by extreme tiredness, although there are many indicators and needs related to chronic fatigue syndrome in children and young people, including:

A child or young person may benefit from having a psychological assessment or intervention if they display any of the following signs:

Chronic fatigue syndrome can affect an individual’s learning, mental health and wellbeing, and when specific needs have been highlighted, they can then be targeted through holistic interventions.

Our services can be carried out following one of our initial discussions, please see our process below.

How are needs related to chronic fatigue syndrome assessed?

There can be different needs related to chronic fatigue syndrome, therefore we provide different assessments for different needs. Our assessments can include observations, interviews and carrying out specific assessments. Different areas of need can be assessed using the following assessments:

Full cognitive assessment

Our cognitive assessment is carried out to assess for cognitive difficulties related to chronic fatigue syndrome. Some of the areas which may be assessed during a cognitive assessment include:

Cognitive assessments also provide a profile of strengths and weaknesses, which enables us to provide strategies tailored to use strengths and support areas of need.

Mental health assessment

Our mental health assessment can assess for various mental health difficulties like anxiety, depression and self-esteem issues. By identifying mental health needs we are able to provide interventions tailored to the child or young person.

Resiliency assessment

Our resiliency assessments provide an insight into a child or young person's ability to cope. A resiliency assessment will allow us to predict how an individual will react to a chronic fatigue episode and we will be able to provide relevant support.

What happens after an assessment?

Following an assessment, we can provide a profile of an individual’s strengths and difficulties or highlight their areas of need. Following an assessment, a report can be provided with the findings and may include recommendations.

Our psychologists might recommend a specialist intervention to target particular areas of needs, or to work on coping strategies using identified strengths.

What interventions do we support?

Our team support many interventions. Interventions to support needs related to chronic fatigue syndrome can include:

Understanding chronic fatigue syndrome in more detail and learning how to provide appropriate support helps children and young people to be happy, safe and ready for life’s challenges. We offer psychoeducation of needs to parents/carers and education staff to raise awareness of needs related to chronic fatigue syndrome.

We also provide consultancy and recommendations in relation to environmental strategies or support. To find out about interventions which we can support, please contact us.
