Needs relating to fibromyalgia can be assessed with or without a formal diagnosis, and can usually be categorised into; cognitive and mental health needs. At HSR Psychology, we can support pain management through psychological techniques through our mental health support, but we do not assess physical symptoms.
A full history will be taken, this will include the development of needs and how an individual is affected. The history will also look at any existing reports and input which has been provided.
Cognitive needs can be assessed through a full cognitive assessment, or through an assessment which focuses on a specific area, such as attention or memory. Identifying areas of needs will allow our team to work with the individual to implement support strategies and techniques.
Mental health needs associated with fibromyalgia can include, anxiety and depression. Mental health needs can be assessed through a clinical interview or questionnaires.
Specific assessments used will vary between individuals and the needs being assessed, potential assessments can be discussed during the Initial Discussion.
After an assessment the information will be collated to show an individual’s strengths and needs. After an assessment, a report can be delivered with the findings and may include recommendations.
Following an assessment, our team members might recommend a bespoke intervention to target specific areas of needs, or to focus on coping strategies using identified strengths.
Understanding fibromyalgia in more detail, including the brain’s pain pathway, and learning how to use appropriate strategies helps children, young people and those around them, which is why we offer psychoeducation of needs to parents/carers and education staff.
Our team support many interventions. Such interventions to support needs related to fibromyalgia can include:
